National Heritage Awards Concert 2008 The National Heritage Fellowships are presented by the National Endowment for the Arts to folk and traditional artists who have demonstrated the highest artistic achievements in their respective disciplines. Initiated in 1982 by then director of the NEA Folk and Traditional Arts Program, Bess Lomax Hawes, the Fellowships honor artists who have made significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the United States. WDUQ presents its annual FREE 2-hour special of this wonderful concert, the culmination of Heritage Week. Hosted by Nick Spitzer, of American Routes, the concert features outstanding representatives of their respective art forms. The 2008 recipients include Dr. Michael White, legendary New Orleans clarinetist, and Mac Wiseman, bluegrass icon. Due to illness, Mr. Wiseman was unable to attend and his good friend Jesse McReynolds performed in his absence. The concert was taped at the Music Center at Strathmore, Bethesda, MD, September 19, 2008. Click here for photos and biographies of the performers Click here for Michael G. Stewart concert photos.
