Kevin Gavin
News Director

In 1976, Kevin joined the staff of DUQ as News Director. DUQ is Pittsburgh's only public radio station with a News Department. Under his leadership and supervision, the News Department has grown sizably in professional staff and regional recognition. In addition to broadcasting NPR (National Public Radio) and PRI (Public Radio International) syndicated news programs, such as Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Marketplace, DUQ regularly produces local news and public affairs programs under Kevin's direction. News reports and features are regularly produced for national broadcast on NPR and PRI news programs.

Kevin is a Pittsburgh native. As a student at Duquesne University, Kevin worked in the DUQ-FM News Department and was a member of Kappa Tau Alpha, the journalism honors society. He graduated from Duquesne University with a B. A. in Broadcast Journalism, Cum Laude.

As a reporter and producer, Kevin's feature reports have won Golden Quill Awards and Associated Press Broadcast Awards.

With an on-going commitment to education, Kevin teaches radio and television writing classes at Duquesne University. He also provides several students each year with the opportunity to learn and experience news reporting with hands-on training and field experience. Over the years, a number of his student reporters have won awards and had the opportunity to file reports for national news broadcasts.

Kevin participated with other public radio journalists in discussions at the Poynter Institute on Journalistic Problems, Challenges and Ethics. The discussions led to the 1995 book "Independence and Integrity: A Guidebook for Public Radio Journalism." Kevin is a member of Public Radio News Directors, a national organization.

In late 1999, Kevin teamed with the news directors of WHYY in Philadelphia, WITF in Harrisburg and WDIY in Bethlehem to develop Pennsylvania Public Radio, a cooperative effort to share news stories of interest to all sections of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Public Radio made its debut in October 2000.

Kevin lives with his wife and daughter in the North Hills.
